CGHA Impact Interview:

Woodside Energy’s New Energies Ambition and Practice

In this Impact Interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with Menno Weustink, Vice President of New Energy Asia Pacific at Woodside Energy. With nearly three decades of experience in the energy sector, Menno has been at the forefront of Woodside's transition from traditional oil and gas operations to innovative new energy solutions. As the company intensifies its focus on low-carbon energy, Menno shares insights into the strategic initiatives Woodside is pursuing in hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon capture, as well as the importance of collaboration and technological advancements in driving the global energy transition.

Executive Summary:

Progress on H2Perth:

The H2Perth project is making significant strides. Menno shared that the hydrogen refueler project passed its Final Investment Decision (FID) last year, marking a major milestone for Woodside Energy. This year, they have already awarded the Major Services contract for construction, with the goal of commissioning and starting up the facility next year. In addition, Woodside is advancing the H2Perth concept to support hydrogen exports to markets like Singapore.

The Role of Collaboration in Hydrogen Economy:

Menno underscored the importance of collaboration in establishing a global hydrogen supply chain. He pointed out that as an energy producer, Woodside is only one piece of the puzzle and must work closely with partners across the value chain. Woodside collaborates with end-users like data centers, and shipping and transport companies, including MOL and KHI, to develop cost-effective shipping solutions for liquid hydrogen.

Woodside Energy’s Strategic Milestones:

Menno discussed the main milestones and goals that Woodside Energy has set for its new energy ambitions. The company is targeting various sectors, including:

  • Heavy Trucking: Replacing diesel with hydrogen in the heavy-duty transport sector.

  • Power Generation: Integrating ammonia into coal-fired power plants as a lower-carbon fuel.

  • Shipping and Aviation: Developing alternative fuels for marine and aviation industries.

Industrial and Chemical Processes: Transitioning from fossil fuel-based hydrogen and ammonia to lower carbon options, including both CCS and electrolytic methods.
